Jack Barber / Website Design

Behind the Scenes

Whilst a lot of the work I do is visual, probably an equal, or perhaps greater amount of work goes into building the systems which run the websites or web applications that I produce for my clients.

Recently I've been working with a local free advertising publication, the Whitby Advertiser.  They've been using Excel spreadsheets and some databases to manage their client data, edition information and artwork.  But recently I've designed and developed a bespoke office management system for them, taking much of the pain out of their administrative processes.

I'll write more about this system in the future.

As a result of this project, the Advertiser wanted to capitalise on their database of advertisers and create a comprehensive online business directory for Whitby.  I added the additional functionality to the existing database system to enable the Advertiser staff to post adverts online, defining business names, contact details, logos, descriptions and more. There is even the functionality for each advert to be linked to a dedicated advertising page, giving the Advertiser's in-house design team the flexibility to offer a comprehensive online advertising solution.

This is what Stephen Ault, the director at Whitby Advertise, had to say about the project:

Following the development of our office administration database, we asked Jack to look into creating an online business directory as part of our new website.  He worked efficiently and effectively with Advertiser staff to create something which is both really flexible and really easy to manage.  We look forward to working with Jack again in the future.
